So, you’re middle aged now and starting to notice your skin isn’t as firm as it once was. You can deal with that, right? But then you realize that unlike a lot of your peers, your skin hasn’t cleared up after becoming an adult. Though it doesn’t happen to everyone, it is quite common for adults (even into their 40’s and 50’s) suffer from adult acne. That, combined with wrinkles does make for an interesting scenario. But not one that’s impossible to deal with.
As we age, it’s possible for older, dead skin cells to get trapped and build up in pores. A la horn and tallow, if you’re familiar with that those terms. The problem lies herein, many older women will look to skin creams and oily moisturizers that can clog those pores even more so. Coconut oil, shea butter, and certain types of other lotions can have the opposite effect on your clogged pores. Another faux pas that older women tend to commit is to use cream-based makeup. Seeing how powder doesn’t have the same effect, a cream seems like the right choice. But block pores, these can do also. This starts a cycle that once started, is very hard to stop. Scrub, medicate, dry out, pick, repeat. Sound familiar? Don’t worry, there are ways to treat wrinkles and to treat adult acne – simultaneously!
Treating Adult Acne – A Better Approach
Mature skin has special needs. Harsh salicylic or benzoyl peroxide based products aimed at treating acne in younger skin can strip mature skin of needed moisture while disturbing the skin’s delicate PH balance. This can cause an inflammatory response that makes acne worse and could trigger more oil secretion and more pimples, as well as leaving the skin feeling too tight. Unbalanced skin can be reactive and is at risk for future breakouts and possible acne scarring. Products that overdry mature skin can also exacerbate fine lines, wrinkles, sensitivity, and redness.
A mild cleanser and balanced moisturizer, combined with healing therapies for inflammation and breakouts, provides the best foundation for any smart adult-acne regimen at home.
To address the special needs of acne in mature skin, The Nouveau Clinic is working closely with a compounding pharmacist to develop their own unique line of scientifically-based adult acne treatment products, aimed at Balance and Healing. This quick, four-step home regimen addresses the complex needs of treating acne in mature skin, by combining the best available topical ingredients, in proprietary formulations. All ingredients and all products are cruelty-free and compounded locally.
The Fabulous Four Steps

The Nouveau Clinic’s approach to cleansing incorporates a delicate blending of Glycolic Acid & Aloe vera in a soothing foaming Cleanser. The healing benefits of aloe vera, are combined with skin conditioning Sweet Almond and Lavender oils to calm and soothe irritated skin. Glycolic acid aids in exfoliating dead surface cells and promotes skin rejuvenation. The unique balance of ingredients in this cleanser provides a gentle daily cleansing option that cleans and rejuvenates simultaneously, without overdrying. Regular use helps to reduce breakouts and excessive oiliness. This product is hypo-allergenic and non-comedogenic. Ideal for sensitive skin and perfect for individuals with Rosacea.
No. 2: Balancing
Mature skin needs the right kind of moisture to heal and maintain elasticity and metabolic processes while treating acne. Our Clarifying Moisturizer is rich in alpha-linoleic acids and avocado extracts that soothe inflammation and itching while decreasing redness and irritation. Linoleic acids provide added moisture, while reducing excessive oil production, and have the added benefit of protecting the skin from free radicals. The silky texture is ideal alone or under foundation.
No. 3: Restoring
Azelaic & Clay Masque
Our acne treatment includes a weekly powerhouse masque that combines Azelaic acid with Kaolin and natural Bentonite clays. Azelaic acid is a common ingredient found in products used for Rosacea, and by itself, is a strong natural anti-bacterial agent that soothes and heals inflammation. Natural clays are effective at helping to reduce acne by removing blackheads, toxins, and impurities on the skin’s surface.
Used once or twice weekly, this home therapy aids in deep cleaning, bacteria reduction, healing and calming.
No. 4: Therapy
Niacinamide, (Vitamin B3) – is the newest superstar ingredient on the scene for treating acne, rosacea, and melasma (areas of hyperpigmentation). It has the ability to prevent the growth of the acne Propionibacterium, and it boosts the immunity of your skin. Most importantly, Niacinamide improves the redness and blotchiness in the skin, while reducing oil flow and hyperpigmentation. Continued use can effectively improve fine lines and wrinkles while treating acne or rosacea problem areas. Niacinamide Serum can be applied directly to affected areas to target blemishes and it reduces the potential for scarring.
